Dionysus: Greek God of Drunken Revelry
by
Charles Rowland
on Fri 30 May 2008 04:07 PM EDT
Dionysus is the god of wine and drunken revelry in Greek mythology. He is a patron of the theater and an agricultural/fertility god. He was sometimes at the heart of frenzied madness. Whereas the Sun God Apollo personifies the cerebral and aspirational aspects of mankind, Dionysus represents the libido, gratification and appreciation for our time of enjoyment here on earth.

by

on Wed 28 May 2008 02:16 PM EDT
COLUMBUS- The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports this Memorial Day holiday weekend was the safest on record for the past 38 years. Six people were killed in six crashes over the holiday weekend on Ohio roads. This is four fewer deaths than during the same period last year. Over the holiday weekend State Troopers arrested 650 impaired drivers and assisted 4,580 motorists. “We are extremely encouraged by fewer fatalities this Memorial Day weekend. However, Ohioans need to focus on Motorcycle safety due to 33 percent of the fatalities being motorcyclists.” said Patrol superintendent, Colonel Richard H. Collins.

Joke O' the Week
by
Charles Rowland
on Fri 23 May 2008 03:39 PM EDT
An old woman was at the hospital due to bouts of explosive diarrhea. While sleeping, she soiled her sheets terribly. Being embarrassed beyond all rational though, she snatched up the sheets and threw them out of the window.
Below a drunk just happened by that very window. The soiled sheets fell on his head and he began to thrash and curse and punch at the air. The sheets landed in a pile at his feet.
Seeing all of this, a security guard approached the drunk. Barely able to control his laugher, he asks the poor inebriate just what he thought he was doing. The drunk slurs, "I think I just beat the shit out of a ghost!"

Sobriety Checkpoints Are the Wrong Way To Catch Drunk Drivers on Memorial Day
by
Charles Rowland
on Thu 22 May 2008 02:00 PM EDT
(May 23, 2007) – PR Newswire WASHINGTON – As Americans take to the roads this Memorial Day weekend, thousands of responsible adults will be detained and subjected to roadblock campaigns. Today the American Beverage Institute (ABI), representing many of America’s family restaurants, called on safety officials to reconsider employing this ineffective method for catching drunk drivers and instead use the most efficient means available for getting drunks, speeders, and distracted drivers off the road: roving police patrols.
The most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirms the superior effectiveness of roving patrols. While the nation saw 34 fewer alcohol-related fatalities from 2004 to 2005, a review of the data finds that for the second year in a row, states that focused their resources on roving patrols led the national decline in alcohol-related fatalities.
Specifically:
- The 11 states that do not operate roadblocks experienced 91 fewer alcohol-related fatalities collectively in 2005 compared to 2004;
- The 39 states (plus the District of Columbia) that operate roadblocks saw a collective increase of nearly 60 alcohol-related deaths;
- If non-roadblock states are removed from the equation, there would have been a net increase in nationwide alcohol-related fatalities last year.
Additionally, a landmark NHTSA study has shown roving patrols to be nearly three times more effective than roadblocks at catching drunk drivers, while a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation official has testified in that state’s Supreme Court that roving patrols are ten times more effective.
“We know that roving patrols are the most effective means of getting drunks off our roads, not to mention distracted and speeding drivers,” said Sarah Longwell, ABI’s spokeswoman, “so why do some states insist on spending tax dollars on manpower and PR to deploy a massive roadblock campaign? These roadblocks target responsible adults who drink legally and responsibly before driving and are all too easily avoided by the repeat offenders and chronic abusers who make up the overwhelming majority of today’s drunk driving problem.”

High Court Charts Path in Child Porn Case
by
Charles Rowland
on Tue 20 May 2008 11:26 AM EDT
Today the United States Supreme Court, in an balanced opinion written by Justice Scalia, upheld a law designed to attack the tsunami of internet sites wherein participants share images of child pornography. The law proscribes a five-year mandatory prison term for promoting, or pandering, child pornography. It does not require that someone actually possesses child pornography.
Speaking for the 7-2 majority, Justice Scalia said that do not apply to "offers to provide or requests to obtain child pornography," Scalia said that the First Amendment does not protect "offers to provide or requests to obtain child pornography." Critics of the narrow decision argue that the law could infringe upon protected speech.
For a great analysis of the decision, see an article by Warren Ritchey at the Christian Science Monitor (available here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20080520/ts_csm/aporn)

California Supreme Court Overturns Ban on Gay Marriage
by
Charles Rowland
on Thu 15 May 2008 03:13 PM EDT
Today the California Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage. In striking down the ban 4 to 3 the justices rules that the limited rights of a domestic partnership would not substitute for the rights afforded by marriage. "Today the California Supreme Court took a giant leap to ensure that everybody — not just in the state of California, but throughout the country — will have equal treatment under the law," said City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who argued the case for San Francisco. (Quote taken from the AP story by Lisa Leff). The rights could be taken away swiftly if California voters approve a constitutional amendment being offered by a coalition of conservative forces.

Joke O' the Week
by
Charles Rowland
on Fri 09 May 2008 02:22 PM EDT
A drunk man stumbles upon a baptism on Sunday down by the river. He walks down into the water and stands next to the Preacher.
The old preacher stops his sermon, turns and notices the drunk and says, "Mister, Are you ready to find Jesus?"
The drunk looks back and says, "You bet!... I sure am!"
The preacher then grabs the man by the shoulders and dunks the fellow under the water. "Have you found Jesus?" the preacher asked.
"No, I didn't!" said the drunk. The old preacher then dunks him under for quite a bit longer, brings him up and says, "Now, brother, have you found Jesus?"
"No, I did not." The old preacher is getting mad now. He holds the drunk under for at least 30 seconds this time, brings him out of the water and says in a harsh tone, "My Good man, have you found Jesus yet?"
The old drunk wipes his eyes and asks the preacher... "Are you sure this is where he fell in?"

Statistics from the DUI Gulag (www.DUIGulag.com)
by
Charles Rowland
on Tue 06 May 2008 03:24 PM EDT
Despite what MADD propaganda would have you believe, in 1996 only .0000143 percent of the American population was killed in so-called "alcohol related" motor vehicle accidents where someone had a blood alcohol content as high as 0.10% . Government statistics indicate that each year more people die as a result of accidental drowning in America than die in low BAC related motor vehicle accidents. A recent study at a major U.S. university found that low BAC drinking drivers pose far less danger to public safety than do non-drinking drivers who have sleep apnea. In fact, your chances of being killed as a direct result of medical malpractice is 28 times higher than your chances of being killed in a motor vehicle accident involving a low BAC driver.
Please visit www.DUIgulag.com for more sobering statistics.

Photo-Enforced Traffic on the Air
by
Charles Rowland
on Mon 05 May 2008 02:40 PM EDT
Today the topic of photo-enforced traffic came up on the Mike McConnell Show on 700 WLW. The Ohio Supreme Court decision out of an Akron case upholding this technology was roundly criticized as was the use of photo enforcement technology. The most prescient comments were about slippery slopes and the good ol' days when America would not stand for things like this. The host's proposed solution: vote any politician who favors photo enforcement out of office. Had I the time, I would start a web site with every official and his/her stance on these important legal issues. Please support the National Motorists Association ( www.motorist.org) and monitor the global impact of these issues at www.TheNewspaper.com. To reach Mr. McConnell go to www.700wlw.com. Perhaps if enough of us speak up we can take our country back!

The Prosecutor's Duty
by
Charles Rowland
on Mon 05 May 2008 02:32 PM EDT
"The [prosecutor] is the representative not of an ordinary party to a controversy, but of a sovereignty whose obligation to govern impartially is as compelling as its obligation to govern at all; and whose interest, therefore, in a criminal prosecution is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done. As such, he is in a peculiar and very definite sense the servant of the law, the twofold aim of which is that guilt shall not escape or innocence suffer. He may prosecute with earnestness and vigor-indeed, he should do so. But, while he may strike hard blows, he is not at liberty to strike foul ones. It is as much his duty to refrain from improper methods calculated to produce a wrongful conviction as it is to use every legitimate means to bring about a just one."

HGN and the Hawkeye
by
Charles Rowland
on Fri 02 May 2008 11:15 AM EDT
AcuNetx Inc., (OTCBB: ANTX), a California company, has developed a device that follows the movements of the eye. The HawkEye System will be employed by law enforcement as an aid in the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (i.e. the eye test) Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. The company hopes to have the devise used by Drug Recognition Experts and DUI cops. As regular readers of this blog will recall, drivers who are impaired with Canabis alone will not exhibit HGN (nor VNG) but will likely show LACK of CONVERGENCE and DILATED pupil size. The company has not announced any research on their web site, but any consolidation of the HGN is welcome news. Obviously, the next generation of DUI cases will involve the use of marijuana. Ohio does not employ DRE trained experts for marijuana DUIs (yet?). For more on HawkEye visit the company web site at, http://www.acunetx.com/.
