Today, the Greene County Bar Association and the Greene County Common Pleas Court sat in special session to remember our fallen colleagues:  Ken Huntingdon, Richard Weade and Marshall Massie.  The service was officiated by J. Andrew Root (immediate past president of the GCBA) and was presided over by the honorable Timothy Campbell and Steven Wolaver.  Arthur Sidell spoke on behalf of his friend and partner Marshall Massie.  Following this moving memorial members of the bar shared stories of Mr. Massie.  Alan Anderson (now a Greene County Commissioner) spoke of his friend and partner Richard Weade and the impact that he and his firm had on the development of many careers in our county.  David Miles spoke on behalf of Ken Huntingdon reminding us all to be professional and to relish the opportunities we have to be and make lasting friendships within the bar.  Later this year the Bar will honor three more of our members; the honorable Judson Shattuck, the honorable Raymond Heiber and the beloved Marshall Peterson.

Trust a witness in all matters in which neither his self-interest, his passions, his prejudices, nor the love of the marvelous is strongly concerned.  When they are involved, require corroborative evidence in exact proportion to the contravention of probability by the thing testified.

  Don Quixote!

I am convinced that doing criminal defense is a form of lucid insanity.  I mean, let's face it, as we get older and more cantankerous we tend to tilt at windmills like DQ.  I have carefully cultivated my own ego-satisfying form of knight errantry in defending the accused drunk driver, justified in my mind by having joined the great attorneys of old who stood against the abusive power of their day.  Go to any defense bar function and you will find many of us ready, willing and able to fly into a rage and slash wildly with any weapon at our disposal.  Too many of us see a cloud approaching and perceive it to be an army of prosecutors when in fact it is only sheep.  We also suffer at the feet of our own Dulcinea de Toboso which we romatically call the law.

Through the years, the travails and countless battles, I have come to love Don Quixote.  He should be the hero of all defense attorneys.  If you need help finding your own windmill to charge, call me.  I know my windmills are all draped in black robes.
